Halifax Development News: Two 10-storey towers planned

A couple of 10-storey residential towers on a connected single-storey podium are proposed for a Bedford Highway site by Premax Developments Ltd. of Bedford.

The project would be on a steeply sloped site on the west side of the Bedford Highway, north of Larry Uteck Boulevard.

Premax is seeking a development agreement with Halifax Regional Municipality for the 11-storey complex that includes 130 residential units and 12,500 square feet of commercial space.

A municipal staff report describes a single storey of commercial space, integrated with underground parking.

The properties involved are listed as 656, 660 and 664 Bedford Highway.

The two residential 10-storey towers, with about 65 units each, sit on the podium base.

Resident amenities for the roof top of the commercial level, and also for the roof tops of the two towers, are part of the proposal.

“This was the best way to create some usable outdoor space for residents on a very steeply sloped site,” Yasser Mohamed, president of Premax, said in an interview.

“The elevators in each building will go right up to the roof, where there will be a deck with a view of the Bedford Basin.”

There will also be some penthouse units.

The developer said he did not yet want to release a cost estimate for the project due to the amount of detailed planning to be completed.

A public information meeting is set for Monday at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Anglican Church Hall, 3 Dakin Dr.

Municipal staff will review the application following the public consultation process and submit a report to North West community council.

A public hearing would be required before regional council makes a decision on the application.

Additional details are available at the municipality website.
