Halifax has become one of Canada’s technology hubs in the last decade. Interactive media firms are sprouting up across the city and a number of innovative online marketing and data analytics companies are finding Halifax has the resources they need to succeed. Part of the reason for this emerging trend is that Halifax boasts an incredibly educated workforce capable of supporting knowledge-based industries. Local schools such as Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s are supporting the growth of e-commerce business with their tech-centric programs.

However, a smart base of professionals is hardly the only reason for the emergence of cutting-edge tech companies. Rather, the presence of savvy small businesses has proven to be a boon for the city in terms of e-commerce and online promotion.

According to the Daily Business Buzz, Halifax was recently recognized by Google as one of Canada’s most vibrant online business centres. The source reported that the search engine giant gave Halifax a Google eTown Award due to local businesses embracing promotions, investment and other online resources in the last year.

Google and research firm IPSOS conducted a comprehensive study of the strength of online markets in cities across the country and found that Halifax was one of just five municipalities worthy of the eTown distinction.

“We’re proud to recognize the growing entrepreneurial spirit in cities and towns across Canada,” said Chris O’Neill of Google Canada in a statement. “Every day, Canadians turn to the Internet looking for products and services, and it’s the businesses and communities engaging with consumers online that will lead Canada’s future economic growth.”

This development shows that Halifax businesses are ahead of the curve when it comes to implementing technology. According to Google, more than half of Canada’s small businesses still do not have a website. With the vibrant tech environment developing in Atlantic Canada, it’s little surprise that Halifax has proven to be an e-commerce leader in Canada.

Small businesses in the city have a wide array of Internet marketing consultancy and big data firms in the area to work with on a daily basis. Such access to tech-based resources has allowed local entrepreneurs to connect with consumers across the world, showing why many startup leaders choose Halifax as their home.

Business-savvy leaders who are considering moving to Halifax due to the wealth of technical capabilities in the area should contact the Greater Halifax Partnership to discuss Halifax’s IT and digital expertise and other business advantages.
