Invest in Yourself before Investing in Real Estate

Before you consider investing in any business, you have to first invest in yourself. This involves investing in your financial education, to understand the world of money, investment, personal financial management and business intelligence. If you want to learn how to make money from real estate in a risk free manner then you need to discover the basics before you begin or expand your investing career. There are endless educational and training resources available to you and selecting the correct one is critical to your success as a real estate investor.

Becoming financially literate does not happen overnight. It involves a lot of study of the subject matter through extensive reading. There are many places where you can get a basic property education.  To start with you could take a look at our popular free investing kit which has been highly rated by many of our readers or you could even look to real estate investing forums which are great for obtaining snippets of  free advice and tips.

If you choose to use free methods such as learning from  investing forums you can get some really useful information; however, since these forums are open you are also going to get information that really you should not take heed of. And for all you Canadian investors – a word of warning, the U.S system is very different to the Canadian investing system.  The problem comes when you don’t know how to tell the difference.

If you are new to real estate investing then sometimes the advice that seems like the right thing to do is actually the thing that we should avoid most.  There is no place for a ‘get-rich-quick’ mentality in real estate and if you follow the advice and promises of some of the ‘investment gurus’ then you will certainly fail .

The other problem with relying on free information to learn how to make money from property, is that it takes a lot of reading and shifting through hundreds of web pages and thousands of words to actually find the few nuggets (if any) of information that will set you on the right path.  This is especially true if you are looking for up-to-date information – real estate rules and regulations change frequently and it really is a time consuming process to keep up to date with relevant industry changes.

If you are serious about making money from property then you have to be prepared to invest in your education.  This might mean investing in well reviewed and recommended real estate investing books geared to your target market and country.  Don’t waste money purchasing U.S. real estate investors books or systems unless you are going to invest in the U.S.  If you are a Canadian investor, stick with the Canadian systems as you will save yourself an enormous amount of time and revenue.  These books can be a valuable source of information for the novice investor and can start the ball rolling in your real estate career.  Whether you decide to invest large sums of money into a full blown property mentorship program or attend real estate seminars is up to you.  In the meantime, you can continue reading, reading and reading and finding out as much information as you can.  Join your local Real Estate Investing Group – most areas have at least one such group and they are often free.  It’s an invaluable way to meet with other investors and share information.

Start your real estate investing career on the right foot by taking the time to consider the right type of education to meet your specific needs and interests.  Real estate investing has an enormous scope – once you’ve mastered the basics, focus on and become an expert in one or two areas.  Don’t become a ‘Jack of all Trades and Master of None’.  Focus your time, energy and education learning all you can in your area of interest.

An inexpensive investment in your education spent at the beginning of your real estate career will pay off in the long run- you will reap the rewards of your hard work and incredible knowledge base!
